Caving in Pennsylvania

The valleys of Central Pennsylvania are floored with carbonate rock and much of this is cave forming limestone. While Pennsylvania caves are generally smaller than the caverns to our south in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennesee, Alabama, and Georgia, they do offer underground explorers impressive beauty, and challenge to practice their skills. Experienced cavers do not venture underground without the proper equipment and technique. The National Speleological Society (NSS) and their local Pennsylvania chapters (Grottos) can provide the proper gear and training for you to safely traverse the underground environment.
